
Hanks was reunited with Ron Howard in his next character, which was as Commander and Astronaut Jim Lovell in Apollo 13 (1995). Critics generally applauded the film and the performances of the entire ensemble, which included actors Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris, and Kathleen Quinlan. The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards and it took home two. Hanks then acted as Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer animated animated film Toy Story (1995). He made his directorial debut one year later, with the film The Thing You Do! The story tells of the downfall and rise of a 1960s-era rock group. Hanks also plays the role of music producer. Richard Schickel of Time magazine described his performance as "charming", and most experts agreed that Hanks acting performance secured him a spot among the most popular romantic comedy stars of his generation.
